What's useful
- Journals and articles, including back catalogues.
- Textbooks and reference works.
- Courses: lessons, assessments, worked examples and mark schemes.
- Educational video with transcripts.
What qualifies
The listing is for publishers and education companies of roughly 10 to 500 employees with long-form content they hold the rights to.
What to check first
- Author and contributor contracts. The key question is whether your contracts give you the right to license works for this use. Many older contracts don't mention AI or text and data mining at all, and authors may expect to be consulted or paid. Take advice and consider talking to your authors.
- Third-party material. Images, figures and quoted extracts licensed in from others usually can't be passed on.
- Open-access content. Creative Commons and similar licences set their own conditions, which you need to follow.
- Policy is still moving. UK law on AI training and copyright is under active review, so check the current position with your adviser.
What it's worth
Mercor lists potential company earnings of $35kâ$370k for publishers and education companies, depending on what's in scope. That is Mercor's own figure, not a promise or guarantee from us.
Can we license only titles where the rights are clear?
Yes. Starting with works you fully own, or where authors have agreed, is a common approach.
Are assessments and mark schemes useful?
Very. Questions paired with model answers are especially valuable.
